This summer I had a great experience at the High School Journalism Institute at Indiana University, and truly learned a lot about the changing world of journalism.

One of the things I learned involved taking a publication multi-platform. This means having a web publication stand alongside a traditional print newspaper. I hope to implement this at my newspaper, and increase the amount readership and student involvement with the paper.

Another thing I learned was how to report world news stories in a way that doesn’t violate several copyright laws. My staff was guilty of simply logging on to Google Images and taking a nice photograph of the gulf oil spill, probably taken by some New York Times reporter. I learned at HSJI that this is stealing! After talking with my wonderful teacher, we now have a way of getting a picture to accompany the story (and AP photos as well), and not violate any copyright laws.

A third thing I learned (though there were a lot more ideas to try than three), was how to run an efficient newspaper, and truly motivate the staff. As Editor in Chief, it is my responsibility to motivate my staff and put out an awesome publication. Also, conflicts should be handled in private, and not in front of the entire staff. I am the face of my school’s publication, and it is my responsibility to cultivate a staff that has the same ideal that I do. Have a publication that increases student involvement, and informs students of what they need to know as well as what they want to know.

I had a great experience at this camp, and networked with other editors. We can support each other as the next school year begins, and help each other produce the best publications our schools have ever seen.

Thanks to all the great speakers, and a special mention to Denise Roberts. You were awesome, and taught me how to do the newspaper right.

Now is the time for me to become a journalist, and not just a kid in high school.

At the High School Journalism Institute, the main point was to obviously learn about student journalism. More specifically, I focused on learning about the dynamics of a publication. I learned about the essential ingredients and qualities that a publication must have to be successful. I learned of the importance of the reader, the staff, and the product.

The reader is obviously the most important part of the publication because they are who the publication is for. The publication was created to serve the reader, and that is its only purpose. It is made to inform the reader, to educate the reader, and to protect the reader. Media was created in our world to create a balance between the people and the being in charge of the people. It was created to inform them of problems and injustices, along with achievements and progressions. It was created to teach them how to accomplish necessary tasks that are not common knowledge. It was created to protect them from a domineering government. There is not a part of the publication that was not created for the reader.

The staff is the next most important part. The staff is who puts together the product, which researches what the reader needs to know and knows how to put it in a format the reader will want to read. The staff is the heart of a publication that puts in all the content, and does all the research to make sure the reader knows what is important.

The product is the face of the publication. The reader does not know the publication by the reader, or by the staff, but by the product. The product contains the information the reader is looking for, written by the staff. It is a bridge between the journalist and the reader, connecting them in an almost tangible way. The product is what the reader looks for in a publication.

With this knowledge, I know that I must put the reader first. Everything I do for the publication must be with the reader in mind. I know also that my job is primarily to help the staff. The staff is the heart of the publication, and my job is to improve them; to teach them ways to properly research and how to inform the reader. I will take the dynamics of a publication to my staff, and teach them the importance of the reader, themselves, and the product they create.

Being newspaper editor-in-chief isn’t going to be as easy as I thought. Here at IU, I learned that. Even though it will be difficult and full of hardships, my passion for journalism still stands. I am eager to start the school year with my new knowledge on how to be editor, and I hope that I can share it with other members on The Riparian staff.

All of the advisers that instructed us were excellent teachers. I learned how to write an editorial, and with a little help from another Editor-In-Chief, I think I did pretty well. Also, I learned how to design pages on InDesign. They aren’t the best pages ever, but they are different from what our publication was at first (I wish I could post them on here). Since The Riparian kind of just started last year, it didn’t have the best layout (it wasn’t the worst). Maybe the staff at Broad Ripple can take a few design classes. Another thing I learned in these sessions are responsibilities of an editor. There are plenty of them, but I am sure I can handle it.

Lectures were given every day. The notes that I took that were most beneficial were from the lectures: “Reporting in a multi-platform world”, “Improving coverage while tackling stories that matter”, and “Developing Multi-media story packages”. I learned about different media types, and how to motivate the staff. I will bring these notes back to my advisor and staff, because we could use this.

This experience was great, and maybe next year I can do it again.

After a week at the High School Journalism Institute, students get ready to pack up their bags and head home. For beginning journalists this week has been a learning experience but for more advanced writers this week was a great way to bring ideas back to their newspaper.

Bobby Gibler, a senior at Mason High School and new staff writer, said, "I can’t wait to take these new ideas here and take them back home." When asked about his overall experience at HSJI, Gibler said, "When I first got here, I was nervous but once I knew our schedule and how it worked, I was fine."

Students spent time in lectures and small group sessions with experienced journalism teachers from different schools. "I was impressed with our instructor (Tony Willis). He was willing to help everybody individually and gave us good tips for this coming year," Gibler said.

One of the main topics throughout lectures and small group sessions was about the use of online journalism. "I learned a lot about online editing, and online work that could help out our website," Gibler said.

"I felt we needed direction because we are new writers," Gibler said. "Next year, our advisor will not do the same thing as our mentor did."

Since I’m the news editor, it is my job to design front pages that will suck readers in and make them want to read the rest of the publication. Our News Briefs, which are little reminders about events happening in our school, were plain and boring last year, so I thought it would be interesting if the briefs were post-it notes tacked to a cork board. People like to look at pictures so there needs to be big pictures. Plus, we are finally getting color on our front, back, and possibly middle spread, so all of the pictures need to have clean, bright colors.
