The Evanstonian Redesign- Grace Kaminski and Charlie Farr

We went for a classic look. The nameplate is simple but appealing and the sidebar helps the whole paper by providing a sort of index and spotlights online content.

My Redesign!

This is my redesign on the Echo. I sort of rushed through it so there’s stuff thats not lined up. But I think that it looks okay. This week has been a blast at HSJI.

Redesign of Floyd Central Bagpiper front page

This is a redesign of the Floyd Central Bagpiper front page. I did it this way because: 1) I did model it off the existing Bagpiper design, but I made a few alterations to make it my own. 2) Part of this (like the flag) was an experiment with InDesign. It turned out well, but it [...]

Charles Farr – Typography Assignment

Clean lines and a love of black and white contrast inspired this design. I used a simple serif to maintain the simplicity and clean lines. Altering the color of the text and background makes it more dynamic. The font is consistent throughout, but the attributes (bold, light, extralight) change, making the card more visually pleasing.

Journalism in a changing world

This summer I had a great experience at the High School Journalism Institute at Indiana University, and truly learned a lot about the changing world of journalism. One of the things I learned involved taking a publication multi-platform.  This means having a web publication stand alongside a traditional print newspaper.  I hope to implement this [...]

The publication dynamic: how journalism governs

At the High School Journalism Institute, the main point was to obviously learn about student journalism. More specifically, I focused on learning about the dynamics of a publication. I learned about the essential ingredients and qualities that a publication must have to be successful. I learned of the importance of the reader, the staff, and [...]

My HSJI Experience

Being newspaper editor-in-chief isn’t going to be as easy as I thought. Here at IU, I learned that. Even though it will be difficult and full of hardships, my passion for journalism still stands. I am eager to start the school year with my new knowledge on how to be editor, and I hope that [...]

My HSJI Experience: Bobby Gibler

After a week at the High School Journalism Institute, students get ready to pack up their bags and head home. For beginning journalists this week has been a learning experience but for more advanced writers this week was a great way to bring ideas back to their newspaper. Bobby Gibler, a senior at Mason High [...]

Hyphen Front Page Redesign

Considering our newspaper is getting completely re-designed next school year, I feel that the Hyphen really needs an interesting, yet sophisticated front page design. Since I’m the news editor, it is my job to design front pages that will suck readers in and make them want to read the rest of the publication. [...]

Student opinion template

I threw this together while I was redesigning my newspaper for the editors-in-chief class:
