Instructors will explain the contest assignment during small group sessions today.

3. If you haven't already, please visit our hsji.org group page on Facebook. Both of these activities will meet outside the counselors’ office about 10 minutes before they begin.

9. Wissler 3 and Wissler 4 are out of the running for the super-secret-lights-out prize this week. However, Wissler 1, Wissler 2, and Elkin 1 are all still eligible to win a pizza party! Remember that at 10:30 tonight you need to be back on Teter grounds, at 10:50 you need to be on your floor, and at 11:00 you need to be in your room for the night (and done getting ready for bed). Lights out at 11:30!

10. Our last move-in day proved to be another smooth event. I met with two professional journalists (in hopes of one day being in their shoes).

First, I sat down with my bowl of pasta and breadsticks next to Rebecca Salerno, who is director of creative services at the Indiana University. She told me that not only was she a student at HSJI, but she also was a previous counselor, too.

"You have to be like a cheerleader," Salerno said after someone at the table questions the hardest part of the job.

She admits that it’s sometimes hard to get people motivated and excited for their work.

Secondly, I met with Leigh Hedger, who is the custom publications manager for my local paper, the Indianpolis Star. It was interesting to meet someone who works for something that I read frequently.

"What’s the best part of your job?" someone at my table asked Hedger.

"I love seeing my name in print," she said.

Hedger didn’t let up on her secret love either; she enthusiastically told us a few more times that she enjoyed seeing her name in print.

All in all, my lunch was a lot more exciting than normally.

(Samantha Coppedge is a sophomore at Hamilton Southeastern High School in Fishers, Ind.)

Since I was a little kid, I remember people asking me what I wanted to be when I grew up. My first answer was a princess. I could live in a castle and wear pretty ball gowns. What could be bad about that?

As the years went on my response transformed, and by second grade I thought I was destined to be a singer. I hoped to become the next Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera touring the world and gracing fans with my voice.

It’s probably not surprising that my plans changed once again, or more like hundreds of times, except now I’m pretty sure I know what I want to do (for the time being).

I hope to go into the field of fashion public relations, so today’s “Lunch With A Pro” was extremely beneficial.

This afternoon I had the opportunity to meet with Rebecca Salerno, the director of Creative Services for Indiana University.

She informed me that “having a degree in journalism would prepare me for a job in marketing/public relations,” so I’ll have to keep that in mind.

After telling her about the career path I wanted to take, she advised me to look up "The Sartorialist," a fashion blog by Scott Schuman, an IU grad. I advise you to check it out. The photography is awesome.

Meeting with Salerno was a great experience, and she convinced me even more to go into the public relations field.

When I start college in two years, it’s possible that I might want to major in something else, but there’s one thing I’m sure of.

I’ll still be asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”

Students had the chance to meet Scott Swan, an anchor for WTHR Channel 13 Eyewitness News in Indianapolis, and his wife Janae’ Swan, the Corporate Partnership Manager for Pacers Sports and Entertainment.

The professionals who spoke to Session I students last week deal mostly with print journalism, but the Swans’ arrival on campus gave the students the opportunity to talk to professionals involved in other aspects of journalism. The curriculum of this session of HSJI has expanded to other areas of journalism as well. One new class this week is the Television News Workshop taught by Alan Bates of Princeton High School in Cincinnati, whose students have already acquired experience shooting around campus followed by editing in their classroom at Ernie Pyle Hall.

Another new class this week is the Advertising and Business Workshop taught by Terry McCartin. This morning, students in the class had the chance to meet the professional staff of the Indiana Daily Student for a talk about constructing ad campaigns. Then, this afternoon McCartin took his students to the T.I.S. Bookstore so that they could do research for their assignment, which is to make an ad campaign for T.I.S.

It is just past 5:30 p.m., but the day is far from over. Tonight, Newspaper and Yearbook students will hear a presentation on teen dating abuse by Middle Way House Prevention Programs Coordinator Lauren Taylor, who spoke to the Session I Newspaper and Yearbook students last week. The students this week will write stories about the presentation for the Institute’s news writing contest.
