Getting to know your counselor…Carrie Schedler

By Rachel Brown

A journalist at heart, counselor Carrie Schedler said she has always deeply cared about providing a voice to those with a tale. “I think those are the really interesting stories; talking to people who don’t normally get to share their perspective,” Schedler said.

Schedler, a junior at Indiana University, is earning degrees in English and journalism. Currently she works as the arts editor for Indiana University’s paper, the Indiana Student Daily. Twice a week she selects stories, helps designers arrange their pages, and posts web updates. “It’s a paid extracurricular activity. I get paid to do something I love. It’s awesome,” Schedler said. She spends an estimated 30 hours a week on journalism related activities, covering everything from self-proclaimed pinball champions to the intricacies of Greek life.

This passion for journalism led Schedler to HSJI in the summer of 2006, as news editor for her high school paper The Torch, and she came back with “oodles of story ideas and interesting ways to get people involved.” Little did she know that just three summers later she would be a counselor at HSJI.

Schedler is a first year counselor on the fourth floor of Wissler. “A lot of the counselors here are veteran counselors. I’m just a newbie,” Schedler said.

However, Schedler said that she does not feel nervous, having been a counselor at other day camps in the past. “I have met so many fascinating people from all walks of life,” said Schedler in regards to HSJI.

“She seems really nice, really willing to talk to you. If I had a problem with anything around the school or on our floor, I’d go to her for help,” said Jessica Villarruel, a fourth floor resident.

Schedler’s enthusiasm has taken her everywhere from science classes in Sierra Nevada, California to the finals of an intramural softball league to the Social Chair of the campus Jewish organization. “Find out where your passion is and follow it anywhere. You’ll find your readers if you find your passion,” Schedler said.

After the conclusion of HSJI 2009, Schedler said she plans to find a job in journalism. “Everyone has a story. Look at people for more than just the information you need to get out of them,” Schedler said.
