Students take advantage of networking opportunities

Lunchtime at HSJI is not just a food break, but yet another chance to take journalism to the next level. Each full day of camp, students have the opportunity to converse with real journalistic professionals at the Wright dining hall.

HSJI has herded quite an impressive group this week. Yesterday, amongst the pros was

An HSJI student takes time after lunch to network with the pros– including Marcia Debnam, a journalism career services expert
Marcia Debnam, the IU School of Journalism’s own career services guru. Debnam answered questions about what to expect from a journalism major, how to academically prepare for college journalism, and how to score great internships. The students seemed especially interested in her advice for the more immediate future.

Other visitors included Indianapolis Star photographers, who were masterfully discussing technological changes in the industry and the uses of modern-day gadgets.

Today, IU’s favorite sports announcer Chuck Crabb shared his expertise in sports marketing and writing. Leigh Hedger, publications manager at the Indianapolis Star, and George McLaren, communications director for GE Rolls-Royce, joined him to discuss a business perspective.

So far, many students have participated in HSJI’s Lunch with a Pro event, but tomorrow no one will want to miss out. Pulitzer Prize winner Tom French will be present to discuss his award-winning feature writing.
