HSJI welcomes 500 high school journalists to campus

The High School Journalism Institute begins its 63rd consecutive summer Monday, July 6, and unlike the economy, numbers are up.

As of Friday, 175 high school students from across the country were scheduled to move into Teter Quad and begin five days of workshops.  The first session, which runs from July 6-10, includes classes in digital photography, graphic design, yearbook and newspaper leadership, basic reporting, features writing, and online journalism.

HSJI’s two other sessions run from July 12-16 and July 18-22.  Nearly 500 students total have enrolled for this summer’s Institute.

Veteran faculty return this summer to facilitate discussions about the changing world of journalism and opportunities available to young journalists.

Masters student Deara Ball and recent graduate Sean Abbott will serve as this year’s head counselors, a role both have filled before.  Other veteran counselors include Kellen Hubert, Kelsey Nash, Daniel Schoch, and Jessica Sternberg. Joining the counseling staff this year are Sarah Hutchins and Carrie Schedler.
