Faculty/Staff Bulletin 2010.3Lunch at Read today Most faculty have decided to dine at Read-Landes Dining Room today. Join us for a change of pace from Wright food court. Read's lunch hours are limited, though: 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. HSJI office staff will be leaving Ernie Pyle Hall at 11:15 a.m. 'Hope to see you there! Contest entries due midday Instructors should submit this week's contest entries by the end of lunch today. Please make sure entries are labeled with not only the lab name but also the contest category. You may give them to Teresa at lunch or drop them by the counselors' office. Steak Day alert Linda, Melanie and I will temporarily take over counselor office duties at noon today in Wissler 300 while the counseling staff heads to Longhorn Steak House for a hearty appreciation dinner. Word is this year's strategy is flavor, not quantity. 'Good to hear the counselors have premeditated their beef consumption. Way to set goals! Seriously, although this year's counseling staff includes only two veterans, they've done a fantastic job. All the newbies have made major contributions to this summer's Institute. I can't imagine a better group to represent IU or the School of Journalism. Bravo! May need to detour a bit As you head to tonight's faculty appreciation dinner at the Irish Lion, be aware that the block in front of the restaurant is under construction. You'll need to park on/near the square or a block south or north of Kirkwood (4th and 6th Streets respectively). I look forward to celebrating yet another wonderful week with our talented faculty and staff. Let's gather at 5:15 p.m. We have some special guests this evening: lab assistants Jenna Gerber and Jeremy Lacey, plus Larry Buchanan (1:30 newspaper lecture today). HSJI 2010 comes to a close The cliché 'small but mighty' comes to mind as we wrap up this third and last session for the summer. Thanks to you all for indulging your director's whims, incorporating more multimedia, nurturing our students, sharing your jokes and stories and being such wonderful colleagues. You're the reason the Institute works. You're part of our legacy. – Teresa posted 7.19.10 10:31 a.m. Contest event a success Your director certainly enjoyed watching HSJI students in action last night. Clicks and flashes from camera shutters and reporters asking focused questions — very exciting! Now, my hope is that students produce excellent coverage of the event. I'm eager to see what they produce. Limit your contest entries, please To facilitate judging, please narrow your entries to the best in your lab. We'll recognize winners in the following categories: news writing, feature writing, editorial writing, column writing and yearbook alternative copy. Please submit your contest entries to Teresa tomorrow (Tuesday) at lunch or to the Counselors' Office during lunch. Speaking of lunch Tribal Council convened yesterday during a meal in Wright Café. The tribe has spoken: we're heading to Read cafeteria for Tuesday's lunch. From 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Read-Landes wing serves a traditional style meal on IU china, with real glasses and with stainless steel flatware. On stand-by is a functioning soft-serve ice cream machine and tasty home-made desserts. What more could you want? Oh, yeah, for a flat fee you can eat all/anything on the menu. McCartin: we're leaving straight from Ernie Pyle Hall. You can ride with us. Scholarships Please encourage students who are entering their senior year to apply for one of our scholarships, due tomorrow morning at 7:45. Students can download the application from hsji.org (see today's announcements) or pick up a hard copy from the Counselors' Office. Céad Mile Failte Tomorrow night faculty will gather at 5:15 upstairs at the Irish Lion for this session's celebratory feast and craic (see restaurant website if you want a translation). The restaurant is located at 212 West Kirkwood (Fifth Street), east side of the courthouse square. We'll celebrate another successful session of teaching, learning and collegiality. Joining us this week with be lab assistants Jenna Gerber and Jeremy Lacey, webmaster Jay Seawell and guest speaker Larry Buchanan — each has made vital contributions to the Institute this summer. posted 7.18.10 11:32 a.m. Final session By initial indications, it seems we'll have a great wrap-up to this summer's workshops. I appreciate your willingness to adjust and experiment with new learning activities. Our smaller numbers provide an excellent opportunity to personalize instruction. In case you haven't heard your director express her appreciation: Thank you! Thanks for being talented, experienced, student-centered teachers. Reminders about student absences Please call the counselors' office (Teter-Wissler 300) right away to report student absences from lectures and labs: 812-856-4673. Give the counselor on duty the student's name and what lab s/he is in. And almost more importantly, if a student arrives after you have reported him/her absent, please contact the counselors so they can call off the search party. The counseling staff has been enforcing our policy: if a student is too ill to attend class, then he/she goes to the health center. Faculty for Session 3 include returnees from Session 1 and "stayovers" from Session 2: Ryan Gunterman and Meredith Bledsoe in photojournalism; Janet McKinney and Terry McCartin in yearbook; Greg Mosley in desktop design; Lori Henson in multimedia; and Jim Lang, Terry Nelson and Tony Willis in newspaper. 1 late arrival and 2 cancellations and 4 commuters By now all students should be settled in to their labs. We have one late arrival this session: Brianna Kirkham, who is registered for McKinney's yearbook lab. Please be aware that we have four commuters this week: Madeline Hayford, Emily Rogers and Eliza Williams (McKinney's lab), plus Jackson Wen (Henson's lab). AV Codes If you're using one of the Teter classrooms your projector code is 78294. The code for all Ernie Pyle projectors is 55218. Finally, if you have a reservation at another lab on campus, use the projector code on the reservation sheet Teresa distributed at the faculty meeting. Ernie Pyle Scholars to visit classes Danielle Rindler and Caitlin Peterkin, both EP Scholars themselves, will be contacting instructors to arrange a time to visit your class this week. Please give them a few minutes to promote the program to your group. Some years over half of the incoming EP Scholars were HSJI veterans, which makes us proud. Individual conferences As is our tradition, please spend some time with each individual in your small group. Of course, groups of students from the same school would work equally well as you discuss strategies for improving their student media. Wright Quad food court Meal cards will work at Wright café, which operates from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. during HSJI. As usual, if you're the first to arrive, select a large table so the faculty can sit together. This session Teresa host Lunch with a Pro on Day 3 only. She will join you as soon as students join her guests. If you're interested in dining at one of the other campus locations (i.e. Read), you can ascertain their dining hours by clicking the link the right side bar on hsji.org. In fact . . . Lunch or dinner at Read sometime this week? After enjoying a lunch at Read last week, several folks have suggested a return visit. Read's cafeteria is traditional, one-price-eat-all-you-want style with real flatware, glasses and plates, a change of pace from the food court at Wright. Read's lunch hours are limited, though: 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for lunch; 5-6 p.m. for dinner. They're open weekdays only . . . so it seems Monday is the prime day to visit. Any takers? Website looking good Each session hsji.org improves. We're receiving more student-generated content, plus webmaster Jay Seawell is doing an excellent job covering the Institute. Your director is unsure, however, whether instructors wish to control which submissions are posted. Please let her and/or lab assistants know if you want us to post your students' work. Completion certificates Our definition of "quality work" equals 100 percent effort, good attendance, a positive attitude and measurable progress, which is what we expect from each participant. Those who do not demonstrate these qualities should not receive completion certificates. Instructors may choose to withhold completion certificates from students who do not complete all assignments, show effort or have good attendance. Scholarships Please encourage students who are entering their senior year to apply for one of our scholarships — due Tuesday at 7:45 a.m. They can download the application from hsji.org (see today's announcements) or pick up a hard copy from the Counselors' Office. Announcements In addition to sharing the morning announcements with your groups, please remind students that they can access the announcements at hsji.org. If the announcements are not at the top of the home page, use the handy announcements category link in the left sidebar. The head counselors and your director strive to publish the daily news by 8:30 a.m. Save our bulbs A gentle reminder to faculty using classrooms in Ernie Pyle Hall: power down the projectors/large screen TVs when you dismiss class, even for lunch. Doing so will not only save electricity, but also prolong the life of expensive projector bulbs. New systems in place By now you should have received a large manilla envelope from Linda. On the front is a checklist of items we must collect from you by the end of the session. Please return your envelope along with the requested items (such as workshop evaluations, classroom keys, flash drive, etc.) to Linda in Teter F255 right after the awards ceremony on Wednesday. Or, if you’d prefer, they may be dropped off after that in the counselors' office. Speaking of flash drives . . . the drive you received contains an Excel file where you will input your evaluation and comments for each student in your class. These may be updated as you go if you wish. Students ought to know that their performances will be evaluated and sent to their advisers via e-mail. Since this procedure is new, please take a look at this file asap so you have time to ask Linda questions if you're unsure how to proceed. Also, faculty who used the new system last week may be of assistance. Student transportation Students who need campus transportation may use IU vehicles – but only with a counselor (or director) as the driver. Please do not give students rides in faculty cars or vans for liability reasons. Additionally, students are not allowed to get rides with friends or family while at HSJI. And the 'in case you didn't know' category . . . Office staff Administrative services coordinator Linda Johnson has HSJI veteran and 2010 journalism education graduate Melanie Mason assisting her this summer. Melanie also has an endorsement in computer education and will be helping out in the labs. Lab assistants Jenna Gerber has returned to campus to assist in the desktop design lab although she graduated in December 2009 and is heading to law school this fall. Meanwhile masters student Jeremy Lacey is our other full-time lab assistant this summer. He will assist Alan Bates in the television news lab. Meet the counselors If you haven’t already, please stop by the counselors' office in Teter sometime soon to meet our counselors. When this group is not working as HSJI counselors, they're serving as teachers, IDS staff, WIUX staff, and Ernie Pyle Scholars. This year we have only two veterans: head men's counselor Sean Abbott and "super counselor" Kellen Hubert. Head women's counselor LaTara Harris is new to HSJI but not to dormitory life. LaTara served as an RA in Ashton for three years, plus last month she has been a counselor and newsletter editor/designer for the Pathfinders program on campus New to the counseling staff this year are Michele Funk, Meg Heatherly, Caitlin Peterkin, Danielle Rindler and Jake Wright, journalism majors who will begin their junior year this fall. |
