So, Now What?

Now that we’re at the end of our week, it’s time to take stock of what we’ve learned — and apply it to the new school year!

What’s your vision for how you will fulfill your role during the coming school year?

The comments section of this post is the place to express these visions staffers have for the coming year. You will see postings from last week’s HSJI students there.

The mission statements focus on the policies, procedures, content and presentation standards that we will strive to meet all year long. They reflect the aspects of our jobs that we will value, prioritize and pass on to the rest of the staff.

They are the roadmaps by which you will create your publication’s legacy.

    To give students a voice
    To inform, engage and entertain our audience
    Procedure – HOW?
    Lead by example.
    Communicate effectively with our staff and community.
    Take a proactive stance towards issues within our school.
    Publish regularly.

    As section editors, we play many roles – mentors, facilitators, collaborators, and critics. In fulfilling these roles, we edit in a professional and constructive manner, remaining open-minded. We care for the section in its entirety, from start to finish.

    Editor-in-Chief Vision–Kellen Hubert and Jim Lang’s Lab–HSJI Week 1

    An ideal editor-in-chief is:

    -an overseer, a role model who facilitates the growth of the staff professionally, creatively, and ethically.

    -an organized, authoritative figure who is a fair, inspiring delegator that maintains all lines of communication at all times.

    -someone who understands what can and should be published while ensuring that content is objective, accurate, unbiased, and diverse.

    -capable of distributing the publication in a responsible manner across different platforms to the school and community.

    -anything and everything their readers and staff need them to be.

    Section Editor Vision—Tony Willis’ Lab, Week 1

    Our policy as Section Editors is to make sure that our design and content are the highest quality they can possibly be. Publications must be journalistically sound. We must seek the truth and report it. Procedurally, we will recognize our rights and responsibilities under the First Amendment. Content must meet legal and ethical standards in a timely manner. The vehicle of publication will be print.

    As an editor I will strive to lead by example, remain consistent throughout the year, and be willing, ready, and cooperative in order to produce a publication of the highest quality.

    The Ideal Reporter

    Policy:

    -To report the truth in an ethical way, and on time.

    Procedure and Management:

    -To be well prepared, cooperate well in the newsroom, to listen, and to follow directions.

    Content:

    -Answer readers questions with a clear and to the point story from both
    sides, while keeping them interested.

    -To publish in a manner that meets the needs of the readers.

    1. Policy-

    · Writers-

    · Expand reader’s views

    · Invoke passion in readers

    2. Procedures and management-

    · Writers-

    · Validate claims with facts

    · Write column with good intent

    · Refrain from libel

    · Equal distribution of stories among staff

    3. Content-

    · Writers-

    · Balance positive with negative

    · Keep things relevant to readers

    · Be honest to yourself and to readers

    · Balance local with national and global issues

    · Keep meaning of story when editing- don’t change meaning of piece

    · Look at columnists’ writing with open mind

    Our mission as section editors is to be accountable for our writers and stories while knowing and following procedures and policies. We strive to adhere to these policies so we can present readers with relevant, honest information as well as motivate writers to report the truth.
