With more student newspapers moving to online editions, Zaltsberg is well qualified to advise others how to train staff and to make the transition.

Also visiting on Monday is Jim Bright, who spent 32 years as a journalist and public relations professional before returning to Bloomington to teach at the School of Journalism. Bright worked in public relations at Ford Motor Company for 24 years, where he directed more than 300 public relations professionals in North America, South America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Africa and emerging markets. His teams were responsible for corporate communications, corporate social responsibility (CSR), product launches and introductions, product recalls, crisis communications, brand communications, employee and retailer communications, and media relations for one of the largest companies in the world.

Lunch with a Pro provides an informal opportunity for students to "hang out" with and ask questions of journalism professionals. Students may use this opportunity to learn more about journalism careers or to ask advice about college.

Pros will be available from 11:30 a.m.-1:15 p.m. in the Wright Quad food court. Look for the tables with balloons.

Each full day of camp, students have the opportunity to converse with real journalistic professionals at the Wright dining hall.

HSJI has herded quite an impressive group this week. Yesterday, amongst the pros was

Jessica Haney

An HSJI student takes time after lunch to network with the pros– including Marcia Debnam, a journalism career services expert

Marcia Debnam, the IU School of Journalism’s own career services guru. Debnam answered questions about what to expect from a journalism major, how to academically prepare for college journalism, and how to score great internships. The students seemed especially interested in her advice for the more immediate future.

Other visitors included Indianapolis Star photographers, who were masterfully discussing technological changes in the industry and the uses of modern-day gadgets.

Today, IU’s favorite sports announcer Chuck Crabb shared his expertise in sports marketing and writing. Leigh Hedger, publications manager at the Indianapolis Star, and George McLaren, communications director for GE Rolls-Royce, joined him to discuss a business perspective.

So far, many students have participated in HSJI’s Lunch with a Pro event, but tomorrow no one will want to miss out. Pulitzer Prize winner Tom French will be present to discuss his award-winning feature writing.

His lecture on understanding Islam lasted only one hour, and all the while students’ pencils were scribbling notes and quotes.

Rahman touched on the fundamental principles of Islam, demonstrating that they are not that different from any other major religion. He worked through the common misconceptions of his religion– one being that Islam promotes violence or terrorism– when in actuality, they are a peaceful people.

Muslims have made a positive contribution to this world, explained Rahman, and their reputation should not be jeopardized by violent extremists. He highlighted instances from the Islamic Golden Age: the construction of the first university, the study of math and algebra, and the mapping of constellations through astronomy.

Rahman’s graph showed that muslims comprise a diverse population. But the media often does not represent this diversity. Even the word "jihad"– meaning merely a struggle– has been used to signify violent combat in the news.

Jessica Haney

Students question Rahman and other muslim community members

After Rahman’s speech, he took questions from students and introduced other muslim guests from the community. There were families, professors, and children of all origins wiling to discuss their religion and its meaning.

Once the lecture adjourned, students pounced on the opportunity to interview these additional sources. After that, they were on their way to winning the prize.

As of 8:30 this morning, all stories were collected. They vary from news coverage, to feature, to opinion, to editorial. We’ll annouce the winners and publish their pieces tomorrow.

His engaged students explained that these HSJI assignments actually apply directly to next year’s yearbook at each student’s respective high school.

The next room over, Mike Frazier’s online journalism class was busy with Dreamweaver. Some students aim to improve their school’s news website, while others are simply interested in learning a new web design program. Either way, it’s important to peruse the internet for good examples– isn’t facebook’s design impeccable?

The newspaper bunch was nestled in Teter, where Tony Willis’s class discussed the importance of oberservation in digging out stories. An old HSJI T-shirt and a pile of photos engaged the students in the meaning of these precious relationships. Lives intersect, White explained, and you never know when you will encounter another HSJI alum. Several are currently IU faculty.

From east to west coast, this year’s students are a diverse bunch. One has even come all the way from Korea. This week’s workshops include photojournalism, desktop design, yearbook, online journalism, and newspaper.

Stay tuned for upcoming events and examples of student work.
